Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a drone strike in Tel Aviv that killed a 50-year-old man and wounded at least 10. The drone, which was armed with a warhead, crashed into an apartment building in a central district that was home to several diplomatic missions, including a branch of the US embassy. Israel's air defense system detected the drone, but it was not intercepted due to human error, according to an Israeli military official.
The Israeli military is currently investigating the attack and does not believe there are any new threats imminent. An initial investigation revealed that no sirens were activated during the incident, and the air force has since increased air patrols. The explosion occurred about 100 meters from the compound of the US Embassy branch, but there was no damage to the mission or injuries to US personnel.
The Houthis have been attacking US targets and commercial ships in the Red Sea since Israel launched its invasion of Gaza following a Hamas attack on Israel that left more than 1,200 dead and the kidnapping of more than 250 others.
The drone strike in Tel Aviv follows an earlier claim by the Houthis that they had targeted ships in the Israeli port of Haifa with drones in joint military operations with Iran-backed militias based in Iraq. The Israeli Defense Forces stated at the time that they were not aware of such an incident.
