The first group of Israeli hostages taken in Gaza has finally returned home. This marks the beginning of a four-day truce, during which further hostage exchanges for Palestinian detainees are planned. Among the freed hostages are four young children, their mothers and five elderly women. These people were part of a larger group of about 240 people kidnapped by Hamas gunmen during a devastating attack in southern Israel on October 7.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his relief and commitment to securing the release of all remaining hostages. He stated: “Each of these individuals represents a world unto themselves. But I assure you, the families and all the citizens of Israel, that we are determined to recover all of our hostages.”
In addition to the Israeli hostages, 10 Thais and a Filipino kidnapped during the same incident have also been released as part of a separate deal brokered by Qatari mediators. The freed hostages have undergone initial medical checks and will be transferred to hospitals to be reunited with their families.
At least 50 Israeli hostages are expected to be freed in the coming days as part of the deal brokered by Qatar. If the truce is extended, additional hostages may be included.
In exchange for the release of these hostages, Israel has released 39 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli custody. This is the first step in the release of 150 Palestinian detainees stipulated in the agreement.
As the army continues its invasion of Gaza in response to the Hamas attack, Israeli leaders have vowed to secure the release of all remaining hostages.
