Hamas has released two Russian-Israeli dual nationals, Elena Trufanova and her mother Irina Tatti, who were among a group of hostages taken from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on 7 October.
The release was achieved through separate negotiations between Hamas and the Kremlin, and brings to three the number of hostages with Russian citizenship who have been freed since Sunday.
The hostages were handed over to the Red Cross on Wednesday afternoon, and Ms Trufanova’s sister, Maria Leizerovich, expressed her joy and relief at the news. However, she stressed that her fight would not end until her sister’s son Alexander (Sasha) and her Israeli fiance Sapir Cohen were also released.
The family was abducted from their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7. Her husband Vitaly died in the attack.
Eight of the approximately 240 hostages originally taken by Hamas were of dual Russian-Israeli nationality.
On Sunday, 25-year-old Roni Krivoi was the first to be released and was reunited with his parents at the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv.
At a press conference in Moscow, relatives of the Russian-Israeli hostages said they had written a letter to Vladimir Putin asking for his help.
“Of course we wrote to Putin,” said Oxana Lobanova, whose son Alexander was kidnapped. “And, of course, we hope that Vladimir Vladimirovich will influence the situation. He is strong for his citizens.”
The release of the hostages comes after a high-level Hamas delegation traveled to Moscow for talks with Russian officials in late October.
The talks focused on the immediate release of foreign hostages and the evacuation of Russian citizens and other foreigners from the Gaza Strip.
