Google AI Overviews, the AI-organized summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, are now available to all users in the US. Initially, these summaries were only available to those who had signed up to Search Labs, Google's platform for AI experiments. However, AI-generated summaries are now distributed to all users, regardless of whether they are registered with Search Labs or not.
AI overviews are AI-generated answers to questions users ask in Google search. They are powered by Google's Gemini generative AI model. However, the accuracy of these AI-generated summaries has been questioned, with some users reporting strange and incorrect suggestions. However, there is no easy way to turn off AI overviews.
Google began testing AI Overviews in 2023 with a small group of users who had signed up to Search Labs. The company recently announced that it would be rolling out AI Overviews to hundreds of millions of users in the US, with plans to expand to other countries soon. Google aims to deliver AI overviews to more than a billion people by the end of this year.
While users cannot directly disable AI Overviews in Google or Chrome settings, there are some workarounds. One option is to use the Web tab at the top of Google search results to quickly switch to a more traditional search. Another workaround is to use a different web browser, as AI overviews do not appear in search results in Safari and Firefox. Finally, there's a Hide Google AI Overviews extension for Chrome that removes all AI-generated summaries from Google search results.
Despite these fixes, AI Overviews are likely to become a more prominent feature of Google search results. Users who adopt this new feature can ask complex questions in Google searches and receive a more complete description of the AI. For example, a user could ask for a 5-day meal plan that includes blueberries and receive an AI-generated response.
