Famed actor George Clooney launched a major op-ed Wednesday calling on President Joe Biden to drop out of the race.
The opinion article, published in The New York Times, establishes Clooney as a “lifelong Democrat” who considers Biden “a friend.” It also quickly gets to the heart of the matter: President Biden's obvious cognitive decline and his ability to win in November.
“I am a lifelong Democrat; I make no apologies for that. I am proud of what my party stands for and what it stands for. As part of my participation in the democratic process and in support of my chosen candidate, I have led some of the largest fundraisers in the history of my party,” he wrote. “Barack Obama in 2012. Hillary Clinton in 2016 .Joe Biden in 2020. Last month I co-hosted the largest fundraiser ever to support any Democratic candidate. I say all this just to express how much I believe in this process and how deep I think this moment is.”
“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As vice president and as president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him,” the actor continued. “He believes in his character. He believes in his morals. In the last four years, he has won many of the battles he has faced.”
Her love for the president isn't enough to keep her from stating the obvious.
“But the one battle he can't win is the fight against time. None of us can. It's devastating to say, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the 'big deal' of Joe Biden in 2010. He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw in the debate,” Clooney admits.
The actor blames fear of Trump for people choosing to ignore the “warning signs,” but the debate was a problem that even the most skilled teacher couldn't explain.
“I was tired? Yes. A cold? May be. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn't see what we just saw. We are all so terrified of the prospect of a second Trump term that we have chosen to ignore all the warning signs. The George Stephanopoulos interview only reinforced what we saw last week. As Democrats, we collectively hold our breath or turn down the volume every time we see the president, whom we respect, step off Air Force One or return to a microphone to answer an unscripted question.”
At the end of the day, Clooney admitted a reality many Democrats were forced to face in the days after the debate: Biden can't win.
“Is it fair to point out these things? Must be. This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed. We will not win in November with this president,” he wrote. “Also, we will not win the House and we will lose the Senate. This is not just my opinion; that's the opinion of every senator and congressman and governor I've talked to privately. Everyone, regardless of what they say publicly.”
He then pointed to some popular names in leftist circles as possible replacements for POTUS.
“We're going to hear from Wes Moore and Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom and Andy Beshear and JB Pritzker and others. We agree that the candidates are not attacking each other but that, in the short time we have, let's focus on what will make this country rise. Then we could go into the Democratic convention next month and find out.”
Closing his piece, Clooney called Joe Biden a “hero” who “saved democracy in 2020” and wrote that the president should resign as a way to “do it again in 2024.”

My friend George Clooney has clearly expressed what many of us have been saying. We love and respect Joe Biden. We recognize everything he has done for our country. But democracy faces an existential threat. We need someone younger to fight. Joe Biden needs to step aside…

If Clooney says so, Obama is actively working behind the scenes.

He knew about Biden's condition before he hosted the fundraiser. The only thing that has changed is that Biden's poll numbers have gone down.

So the White House outright lied to us?

It will be so much fun if Joe stays.

George Clooney still hasn't forgotten that Biden disagreed with Clooney's wife to accuse Netanyahu of crimes.
