A married former Connecticut school employee was arrested Tuesday for raping an 11-year-old student.
In September, local police began investigating Columbia woman Alyson Cranick, 42, a paraprofessional at the school, after receiving a report that she had sexually assaulted an 11-year-old boy.
“Police said the 11-year-old boy told a relative that he had a sexual relationship with Cranick during July and August 2022. The boy said he had communicated with Cranick through iMessage and Snapchat before ultimately using Discord,” according to locals. station WVIT.
“The boy allegedly went outside to meet Cranick and the two had sex in his car on several occasions. The two had also kissed at Columbia’s Horace Porter School, according to court documents,” notes the station

According to an arrest warrant, the two often exchanged sexually charged messages. In addition, Cranick made the victim a bracelet with the acronym “BFFLWB,” which stands for “Best Friends for Life With Benefits.”
The arrest warrant further notes that Cranick was “emotionally manipulative [the victim] to spend more time with her,” that the victim “left her home on at least 14 occasions during the night hours to meet with Cranick,” and that when she did leave, Cranick was waiting for her “hiding behind a bush.” on a neighbor’s property or walking to his house.”
At some point, the victim told Cranick he didn’t want to see her anymore and wasn’t going to sneak out anymore.
When interviewed by authorities, the 42-year-old woman said she did not initiate sexual contact. It also “minimized any inappropriate reasoning for communicating [with the victim]”, according to the arrest warrant.
In fact, Cranick dubiously claimed that he had only been trying to comfort the victim based on the family problems he had allegedly been experiencing.
Columbia School District Interim Superintendent Barabara Wilson informed parents of what had happened in a letter.
“I am writing to inform you that a former Columbia Public School employee was arrested for sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. Clearly, any allegations of inappropriate contact with minors is disturbing and raises concerns for the safety of children in our school community. Members of the Columbia community should be assured that the safety of children is the district’s top concern. The Columbia Board of Education has adopted strong policies and procedures to promote safety and well-being of all our children,” the letter says.
“Members of our community with information or concerns about this matter or any concerns or allegations related to inappropriate contact with students are encouraged to contact me. Any such concerns can also be reported directly to law enforcement and/or the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families. Parents may also contact any building administrator,” he continues.
“It is very sad to have to share this information with you today. As educators, we have a responsibility to protect and educate all of our students. Maintaining appropriate faculty-student relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of our students at all times is fundamental. My hope is that this horrific and appalling situation does not overshadow the important work done by the teachers and staff members of the School District of Columbia, who provide an exceptional education and a safe environment for our students every day.” concludes
According to the local station WFSB, Cranick has been fired from EO Smith High. Also, her parents traveled to Connecticut this week to try to rescue her.
“The judge said they have to pay 10 percent of the $500,000 bond in court. It seems her family was hoping to take her back to Pennsylvania, where she’s from. The judge said if the family unites, he must stay in Connecticut,” the station notes.
In response to what happened, social media users were outraged, particularly by media reports that Cranick had merely “had sex” with the victim rather than raping him.
