Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard convicted in Toronto sexual assault case

-

In a Toronto courtroom, a dramatic verdict was delivered as former fashion mogul Peter Nygard was convicted of four counts of sexual assault. His son, Kai Zen Bickle, who was present during the proceedings, expressed his relief after the verdict, calling his father a “systemic monster” who misused his business acumen to exploit others.

Bickle, who hadn’t seen his father since a 2019 dinner where he alleges he saw Nygard behaving inappropriately with a girl, has been a staunch advocate for his father’s victims. She has spent the past four years helping authorities and supporting those who say they were victims of her father’s abuse.

After the 2019 incident, Bickle reported his father to a company executive, only to be fired. Without stopping, he contacted lawyers involved in a civil case against his father, offering them information and working to thwart Nygard’s attempts to liquidate the company’s assets.

In 2020, Bickle publicly declared her father a flight risk, a move that cut off all contact between them. The Toronto trial revolved primarily around the testimony of five women who alleged they were sexually assaulted by Nygard at his company’s Toronto headquarters. The victims were aged between 16 and 28 when the alleged assaults took place, which ranged from the 1980s to 2005.

Nygard, whose wealth was estimated at $700 million, faces further allegations of abuse by several other women. He will go on trial in Montreal next year and faces additional charges of assault and confinement in Winnipeg. After his Canadian trials are concluded, Nygard is expected to be extradited to the United States to face further charges. Two of Bickle’s younger siblings have also filed a lawsuit against Nygard, accusing their father of hiring a sex worker when they were teenagers. Nygard continues to deny all allegations.

Nygard’s sentencing for the Toronto trial is scheduled for Nov. 21.
