British passengers, including some England football fans, experienced significant delays on their return journey from Germany after an “undefined smell” in the plane's cabin forced an unscheduled return to Berlin. Eurowings flight EW8470 to Manchester, which took off at around 8am local time on Monday, had to turn back after just half an hour in the air.
The airline declared an air emergency, a standard procedure to ensure a priority landing. Upon landing, the plane was inspected by firefighters. Eurowings confirmed in a statement that there was no fire or smoke in the cabin, and at no time was there any danger to passengers or crew.
The airline arranged an alternative flight for the affected passengers and provided them with meal vouchers at Berlin airport. However, some of the 150 passengers on board expressed their dissatisfaction on social media, claiming that there was no Eurowings representative at the airport to help with meal vouchers or rescheduling the flight. Some passengers also claimed they saw smoke in the cabin before the plane landed.
Communication from Eurowings was poor, with one passenger reporting an eight-hour delay without any updates from the airline. Another passenger expressed his frustration at being left in the dark about his luggage and how to secure a new flight to Manchester.
It is understood that a new flight was due to take off at 3.30pm local time, seven and a half hours after the original departure time.
