Donor Fraud Investigation Targeting ActBlue Donations to Biden-Harris Campaign

ActBlue's donations to the Biden-Harris campaign are the subject of a donor fraud investigation by a Republican group that has said it has uncovered thousands of potential violations.

The Fair Election Fund, an election integrity watchdog group launched in May with the help of former Georgia Rep. Steve Marshall, Alabama's attorney general, is one of the state officials receiving data from hundreds of verified leads.

“We are grateful to the Fair Election Fund for sharing these findings with us as we explore whether any of our constituents have been defrauded by ActBlue,” Marshall said. “Any fraud by donors compromises the fairness of our elections and cannot be tolerated. Our republic depends on Americans trusting the election process, and we will aggressively pursue any leadership that threatens to undermine public trust.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation into ActBlue's operations in December 2023, saying the entity “has been the subject of numerous allegations of illegal activity, including that its platform may allow the fraud”.

“ActBlue has cooperated with our ongoing investigation. They have changed their requirements to now include 'CVV' codes for donations on their platform,” it said in a statement last week. “This is a critical change that can help prevent fraudulent donations.”

“But it's more important that we enforce the law and protect the integrity of our elections,” Paxton continued. “Some features of campaign finance law may incentivize bad actors to use platforms like ActBlue to covertly move money to political campaigns to evade legal requirements. Although campaign finance is protected by the First Amendment, suspicious activity on fundraising platforms must be fully investigated to determine whether any laws have been broken.”
