Another Disney miss at the box office: The studio’s latest original animated film bombed with moviegoers over the holiday break…marking just the latest flop for them.
Of course, we are talking about “Wishes”… with Ariana DeBose as the main character and Chris Pine like the big bad and a bunch of other likable side characters. Unfortunately, none of those were enough… because “Wish” only made $31.7 million over the 5-day “weekend.”
Ticket sales were being tallied since Wednesday, but on Sunday… “Wish” had underperformed. Projections had been pegged at $45-50 million for the same 5 days.
It wasn’t great internationally either, pulling in just $17.3 million overseas…bringing its total worldwide haul to around $49 million. In simple terms, the film flopped, ending up in third place behind “Napoleon” (No. 2) and the prequel to “The Hunger Games” (No. 1, again).
That’s not good news for the House of Mouse…which usually dominates the Thanksgiving window. Until last year, when its other original animated feature “Strange World” had an abysmal performance, Disney had released hits this time of year… including “Encanto,” “Coco” and others, all of which made a shitload of money right out of the gate.
What’s strange is that “Wish” actually had good reviews and a great audience reception…so it’s not clear what the problem was exactly. It is possible the Strike CASE it made it difficult to promote this movie… but it also ended well before its release date, so it’s a bit of a mystery.
Note that this is just the latest Disney fic this year; others include the latest Indiana Jones movie, “The Haunted Mansion,” “The Marvels” and others. Tough year, really.
