CNN's John King breaks down which voter demographics will be key in swing states

CNN's John King broke down which voter demographics will bolster the chances of Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump winning the November election during a Friday segment.

King noted how Harris may fare better among women and racial minorities than President Joe Biden, but that white male voters helped Biden win in 2020. The 2024 race has become increasingly competitive since Harris replaced Biden after his way out of the ticket in a Sunday statement to “X”.

“Where is Kamala Harris with the key voting blocs? First, is African-American support increasing? Then, maybe in 2008, she put North Carolina on the line. Is support for Latino voters increasing? Then Arizona and Nevada become a little more interesting for Democrats. Donald Trump is leading there right now. But if you think about Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan … it's a lot easier for Democrats to get to the White House if you win those three,” King said.

“So what are you going to look for in Kamala Harris? How is she doing among white voters, especially white men? Hillary Clinton got to thirty. She lost those three states. Joe Biden got close to forty, won three of those states. And older voters, like Pennsylvania voters, older voters and white men were a key part of Biden's coalition to win those blue wall states when Hillary Clinton lost those states,” he continued.

CNN Political Director David Chalian noted a CNN poll as of Wednesday, Harris was found to be doing significantly better than Biden in both battleground states and nationally. The poll found Harris trailing Trump by three points, 49 percent to 46 percent, in July, while the former president led Biden by six points in the same poll conducted in April and June.

Harris polled better than Biden among 18- to 34-year-old, Hispanic, black and female voters, according to the CNN poll. The vice president leads Trump among young people 47% to 43%, while she has narrowed the Republican candidate's lead among Hispanics from nine to two points.

Harris also has a larger lead than Biden among female voters by five points, 50% to 45%, while Trump and Biden tied 46% to 46% among the female population in April and June , according to the survey.

The poll polled 1,631 registered voters between July 22 and 23 with a margin of error of 3 percent. The survey questioned the same voters who participated in the survey published in April or June.

king pointed out on Biden's low chances of success during a July 18 segment, three days before the president dropped out. Trump was competitive in the traditionally blue states of New Hampshire, Colorado and New Mexico, while beating Biden in Virginia.
