California Democratic voter Andrew McDonald and California Republican Parker McGinley shared their thoughts on the recent debate between California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. While McGinley found DeSantis' performance “disgraceful,” McDonald believes Newsom is preparing for a possible 2028 presidential run.
The two young voters, who are students at Fordham University, appeared on “The Story” Friday to discuss the debate. McGinley, a Republican, expressed disappointment in DeSantis' performance, saying he expected a more charming and charismatic performance from the Florida governor. He also criticized DeSantis for trying too hard to emulate former President Donald Trump, saying he lacks Trump's natural charm.
“I was hoping that he would show a little bit more of the charming persona that we see in Trump, and right now he's been taking a beating: going to play, looking for ticks, trying to get on Instagram, trying to get into . all these social media apps and trying to look like the tough guy, Trump more than Trump than any other Republican,” McGinley said.
Instead, McDonald, a Democrat, said he is not a fan of Newsom but believes the governor is laying the groundwork for a presidential run in 2028. He pointed to Newsom's recent praise of Trump and his advocacy of health care of Biden as evidence of this strategy.
“I'm watching all the debates, but this debate mattered as much as every other Republican debate,” McDonald said. “I don't think any of these men will be president in 2025.”
The debate between Newsom and DeSantis was widely seen as a preview of a possible 2024 presidential election showdown. However, both participants have denied that they are currently running for president.
