Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville launched a tirade against incoming House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday, going so far as to claim that the speaker and other Christians like him are a bigger threat to America than even the terrorist group Al-Qaeda.
Carville delivered the quirky, off-the-cuff and emotional take while appearing on Bill Maher's HBO show, “Real Time.”
“Mike Johnson and what he believes is one of the greatest threats we have in America today. I promise you I know these people,” he said.
Listen via CNN:
This prompted Maher to ask Carville if he was referring to Johnson's alleged Christian nationalist beliefs. In response, the Democratic strategist doubled, tripled and quadrupled his conspiracy theory.
“Absolutely,” Carville replied. “This is a bigger threat than al-Qaeda to this country. Let me tell you one thing. They have the Speaker of the House. They had at least two Supreme Court justices, maybe more. Make no mistake. The people and the press have no idea who this guy is, how he was formed, what the threat is, and this is a fundamental threat to America. It's a fundamental threat. They don't believe in the Constitution. That's what they will say.”
“Mike Johnson himself says, what is democracy, but two wolves and a lamb eating? This is what they really believe. And to say, come on, man, this is just crazy shit. No, no. They believe it and come and have been doing it forever. They are funded. They are relentless. And, you know, they probably won't win for a while, but they do. And if they do, the whole country blows a joint”, he continued.
He offered no evidence to support his theory that Johnson, who has been in office since 2017, either doesn't believe in the US Constitution or is a radical idiot, unless the speaker's normal Christian beliefs are the “evidence.”
Regardless, Johnson's fans were unhappy with Carville's attack on him and his staunch Christian beliefs, beliefs shared by millions of Americans.
Look at:
you are an idiot You just hate Christians. That's what it amounts to

@JamesCarville Shame about lying about Christians. The Lord scolds you.

@JamesCarville he hates Christians and thinks they are the biggest THREAT to America… What an upset, BIG!

Do I see you Maher calling Johnson the greatest threat to America? Really? We live in real time in a shithole made by Dems for the last 3 years. Your extremist rhetoric is the reason we are divided. I don't agree, but tone it down.

@JamesCarville Is Johnson a bigger threat than Al-Qeada? You lost it. Are you panicking? I guess you would have said the same about the founding fathers. Idiot! But do you have the right to say what you did? Isn't that great? But do you want the conservatives to shut up?

Hey lefty snake head. You criticized Mike Johnson's faith on Bill Maher's show. Now you sound like Hamas, which also hates Christians (and Jews, of course). You wouldn't have a problem if a satanist was the speaker…if he had a D in his name.

Maher himself also attacked Johnson during another segment on the show.
“Mike believes that God personally chooses, raises up our leaders, which is a very dangerous thought because then when you lose an election you think it's just another one of God's tricks to test your faith. Mike says we started as a Christian nation. We didn't. Did you miss that day at home school, Mike? If you don't know that the Pilgrims came here to get away from the Church of England, then you literally don't know the first thing in our country”, he said.
“Mike says being a Christian nation is our tradition and who we are as a people. It's not. We are the people who have a First Amendment that says 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion “. And we have article six which says 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification for any office.' So I take these people at their word when they say they think we should be Christian nationalists. But then they have of believing John Adams when he wrote, “The government of the United States of America is in no sense founded on the Christian religion,” he added.

This isn't the first time Johnson has been attacked on Maher's show. Last month, he reportedly claimed that the speaker, who has a black adopted son, FYI, sounds “exactly like Bin Laden.” Like Bin Laden who orchestrated a terrorist attack that killed thousands of Americans.
