Biden admin unveils new tools to counter anti-Semitism, Islamophobia in schools

The Biden administration on Tuesday announced new resources to counter anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in U.S. schools following the Oct. 7 terror attacks by Hamas in Israel, according to a White House press release.

College students signed letters blame Israel over terrorist attacks by Hamas and several student groups led pro-Palestinian protests with images associated with violence against Israel The White House released a series of guides and resources to “help protect students, engage school and college leaders, and foster safe and supportive learning environments.”

The National Center for Safe and Supportive Learning Environments released two sets of resources to help prevent anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, one aimed at P-12 schools and the other at colleges and universities, according to the press release. Resources for P-12 schools address how to combat anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, while higher education resources also offer guidance on “cultivating tolerant, safe and supportive campuses.”

The White House announced that senior education department officials will hold sessions with P-12 school and college leaders this week “to gain key insights from the field about how some schools are keeping students safe,” according to the statement from press

The White House also announced that ED’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education will launch a series of webinars to develop and share strategies to “help schools prevent and respond to threats based on hate, the ‘bullying and bullying’, according to the press release. The webinar series will hold a session on “Creating a Welcoming Environment” on December 6 and another on “Full Student Engagement” on December 13.

There will also be a webinar session on “Conflict Mediation” on January 17 and one on “Ongoing Support” in February.

The University of Pennsylvania had to contact the FBI in November research anti-Semitic threats made on campus after several Jewish faculty members received threatening emails about their “personal identities.” The emails led to security checks at a Jewish religious center and a campus residence hall.

Jewish students at The Cooper Union, a college in New York City, hid in a library as pro-Palestinian protesters. tested to break entry in October. Video of the incident showed students standing in the library, watching as protesters pounded on closed doors and chanted pro-Palestinian slogans.
