Bavaria in the snow – Eugyppius: a plague chronicle

-

In a nutshell time article on winter fashion from October 13, 2023, reads the following deeply funny lines:

Winter may not be cold anymore, but our jackets are getting thicker and thicker. This fashion satisfies our longings for a climate that no longer exists.

….

This year saw the highest temperatures ever recorded around the world. Even on some days in the middle of October, you could still get away with a shirt in this country. How many real opportunities will there be this winter to walk the world in fully padded down jackets? This year's radical winter take on jackets and coats seems to appeal less to real needs than to satisfy our longings. longing for a climate where it's still freezing cold, where snow falls regularly and winter weather lasts longer than a few random days in February. The yearning for a world, that is, where climate change does not exist…

Weather, like viruses, sooner or later makes a fool of all forecasters. Sometime last night, the winter storm I finally stopped, and this morning I woke up to a clear and cold morning. The sun shone on 60 centimeters of snow in the Bavarian highlands. An avalanche warning has been issued for all alpine elevations above 1600 metres, and it's still only early December. Munich, a little lower and to the north, works less than 44 centimeters, more than ever fell in the city in a single day since record keeping began. Finally they dug Munich Main Station i the airport reopenedbut still very few trains and planes go anywhere.

Your regular schedule will resume tomorrow. I have just returned from a somewhat treacherous run in the hills and I am providing you with some photos of the beautiful Bavarian winter.

Fallen trees have cut power to thousands of homesbut I'm happy to report that most of our local trees are standing strong and brave under the weight.

From this small clearing you can see back to my town; the houses are hidden under the frozen trees, but some roofs can be seen on the right.

The higher pastures are all asleep under the snow. The wild animals have yet to come out of their shelters, and there were no tracks but mine.

Here you can see the Mangfall mountains between the Leitzach and Inn valleys. The highest peak in this image is Wendelstein.

After about 5km on this trail the snow got too big so I had to go back down. Here are some of the farms on the hill; the cows are all in their barns for the winter.

Another farm:

And another, back in the valley now on his way home:

Today is the first day of Advent and I wish all my readers a Merry Christmas.
