More than two weeks after the on-ice death of a professional hockey player, he was arrested for involuntary manslaughter.
On October 28, Adam Johnson, 29, of the Nottingham Panthers was fatally slashed in the throat, reportedly by the skate of opposing player Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers. On Tuesday, although South Yorkshire Police did not release the name of the arrested person, a statement was released detailing that an arrest had been made and the suspect remained in custody.
According to police, “Detectives arrested a man today on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. He remains in police custody at this time.”
“On Saturday 28 October, 29-year-old Adam was seriously injured during a match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers and was later pronounced dead in hospital,” authorities added. detailed. “An autopsy confirmed that he died as a result of a fatal neck injury.”
A clip of the incident which had taken place on live television showed Petgrave’s unusual move which critics described as an attempt to kick Johnson and not a simple accident.

As part of the authorities’ statement, Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said: “Our investigation began immediately after this tragedy and since then we have carried out extensive inquiries to piece together the events that they led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.”
“We have been speaking to highly specialized experts in their field to assist us in our inquiries and continue to work closely with Sheffield City Council’s health and safety department, who are supporting our ongoing investigation.” it continued.
The chief further added: “Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans around the world. We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any other and we ask that members of the public refrain from comments and speculation that could hinder this process.”
Although Petgrave had been taken from the game and described as “absolutely distraught”, his image had been displayed at a game on Sunday where many of the 8,000 fans in attendance appeared to rally behind his team.

Likewise, the Panthers, who had referred to the incident as a “freak accident” in their own statement, had found several ways to honor their player, including a commemorative jersey, a fundraiser and a temporary delivery to ice in memory.
