Philadelphia mAioral candidate Helen Gym has received the support of big names on the progressive left, such as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
Gym announced that Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez will join Saturday in a rally “about the joy and the possibility and the power of the people, and that’s the energy we carry with us on Election Day” in support of his campaign.

“Helen Gym is a fighter for working families,” Sanders tweeted. “She has fought for strong public education, legislation to protect renters’ rights, and health care for all. I am proud to support her campaign as mayor of Philadelphia.”

Gym, a former member of the Philadelphia City Council, has drawn national attention as a figure of political polarization, focusing his campaign on reimagining how local government can help working families and children. The gym has fought for education reform, an immigrant defense fund and benefits for hourly workers.
“Helen is not afraid to take on tough fights or take on big special interests. And when she does, she wins,” Ocasio-Cortez told the Intercept. “She has delivered real results for her constituents, making communities safer, housing more affordable and public schools stronger. I am proud to endorse her.”
If Gym wins, he will join the ranks of other liberal leaders taking on big cities, including Brandon Johnson, who won Chicago’s mayoral race last month.
The primary is expected to be close, with Gym one of the five front-runners for the Democratic nomination and voters heading to the polls on May 16.
