The memoirs of Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator JD Vance have seen a significant increase in sales following their announcements to run for president and vice president, respectively, in the upcoming election. Vance's 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” has soared to the top of Amazon's best-seller lists, taking the No. 1 and No. 3 spots in paperback and hardcover editions. Prior to the announcement of her candidacy, the book was ranked #220, but quickly rose to #1. The memoir is currently the best-selling book in Amazon's categories of Biography & Memoirs, History & Politics, and social Sciences.
Harris' 2019 book, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” has also seen a similar increase, rising from the No. 33,154 spot to No. 153 and is expected to continue rising. However, in terms of lifetime print sales, “Hillbilly Elegy” has surpassed “The Truths We Hold” by 624%. By mid-July, Vance's book had sold 1.5 million hardcover and paperback print copies, compared to Harris' 207,000.
The political careers of both Harris and Vance have received a boost recently. Harris received the endorsement of President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the 2024 presidential race. This endorsement not only gave him a significant advantage over other potential Democratic candidates, but also access to Biden's campaign fund from 96 million dollars, which was renamed “Harris for President”.
Vance was named the former president's running mate on the first day of the recent Republican National Convention and accepted the nomination on the third day. His memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which offers insight into his Midwestern upbringing, Appalachian heritage and commentary on the economic struggles of rural America, earned him respect as an author long before he began his political career. Despite receiving mixed reviews, a film adaptation of the book earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
