Amid growing concerns about Russian and Chinese aggression, NATO is thinking deploying more nuclear weapons. The alliance is having active consultations on how to be transparent about its nuclear arsenal and use that transparency as a deterrent.

The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, in a recent communication with the British newspaper Telegraph, stated the need to consult on these issues saying: “I will not go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which ones have been to store, but we need to consult on these issues. This is exactly what we are doing, transparency helps to communicate the direct message that, of course, we are a nuclear alliance.”
Although NATO supposedly aims to have a world without nuclear weapons, Stoltenberg stated: “As long as nuclear weapons exist, we will pursue a nuclear alliance so that a world where Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons, and NATO is not, it is not a more dangerous world.”
He added that nuclear weapons are the alliance's “last security guarantee” and a means of maintaining peace.
Russia has repeatedly warned that it could use nuclear weapons to protect itself from aggression. He has accused the US and its European allies of pushing the world toward nuclear confrontation by providing Ukraine with billions of dollars in weapons, some of which are being used against Russian territories.
NATO, which is playing an active role in coordinating the supply of arms to Kiev, has rarely spoken publicly about the weapons. The US is known to have deployed nuclear bombs at various locations in Europe.
