Mac Brown resigns as chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky

-

Kentucky Republican Party Chairman Mac Brown announced his resignation Monday after eight years in the position. Brown’s departure comes just weeks after the GOP failed to unseat Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear in the state’s primary race.

In an email to members of the Republican State Central Committee, Brown reflected on the GOP’s electoral successes during his presidency, but offered parting advice apparently aimed at mending intraparty rifts that emerged as the their ranks

“Over the past eight years we have made great progress in transforming the Commonwealth into a state of opportunity, but much work remains to be done,” Brown said in the email. “The key to our future success is for the Republican Party to come together and not fight each other.”

Brown urged party members to “listen to and respect each other”.

During Brown’s tenure, Republicans won control of the Kentucky House and Senate, and the party now holds supermajorities in both chambers. The GOP also outpaced Democrats in voter registration statewide last year.

However, the GOP’s inability to unseat Beshear in recent elections has raised questions about the party’s future in Kentucky.

State GOP officials did not immediately comment on the timing of choosing Brown’s successor.
