More than 23 million immigrants eligible to vote by 2024: report

More than 23 million legal immigrants who are now US citizens are eligible to vote in the 2024 presidential election, according to a new report.

Published by American Immigration Councilthe report notes that of the 23,775,184 immigrants who became naturalized US citizens living in the US, 23,053,019 are eligible to vote.

In addition, there are an additional 13,336,047 immigrants who are eligible for naturalization and will therefore soon be able to vote as well.

“As more immigrants become naturalized and eligible to vote, they continue to gain political power. The number of immigrant voters is only projected to increase over the next decade, and in some states, foreign-born voters are already able to decide the election,” the report states.

Based on the size of the US population, it looks like immigrants for now will continue to represent 1 in 10 of all eligible voters in 2024.

“More than 23 million American immigrants will be eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election, representing approximately 10 percent of the nation’s total electorate.” Pew Research Center reported in 2020.

“The number of eligible immigrant voters has increased steadily over the past 20 years, up 93% since 2000. By comparison, the population of eligible voters born in the United States grew more slowly (18%) during the same period, from 181 million in 2000 to 215 million in 2020,” continued the center’s report.

Note that all of these numbers refer to LEGAL immigrants. As for illegal immigrants, Congress passed a law in 1996 barring them from voting in federal elections. However, they can still vote in state and local elections, depending on the laws of the jurisdiction.

As of June 2023, there were only seven states where illegals were barred from voting in any election, according to Ballotpedia: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, North Dakota and Ohio.

“[T]here were more than 25 million non-citizens living in the US as of 2020. This included approximately 12 million permanent residents and 2 million temporary residents who were in the country with legal permission, as well as approximately 11 million immigrants who they resided in the country without legal permission. ”, notes Ballotpedia.

The issue of illegal voting came to the fore earlier this year when congressional Republicans voted in favor of a resolution to overturn two local Washington, D.C., bills starting in October of 2022, including one that allowed non-citizens to vote in local elections. and another that undid the city’s rewrite of its penal code.

Speaking on Fox News after the vote, Rep. Thomas Massie explained why he voted for the resolution. Allowing non-citizens to vote “is an attack” on democracy, he argued.

“It’s an attack [on democracy]and after years of balking at Russian interference, Democrats have now voted to let Russian nationals and Chinese Communists vote in our elections,” Massie said with some derision.

“So right now there are at least 50,000 aliens in Washington, DC. And … some of them have visas, but about half of them don’t have visas. They came here illegally,” he added. .

“And I asked him [House Oversight Committee] Ranking Member Jamie Raskin since DC allows people who are incarcerated in jail to vote does that mean an illegal alien who is in jail can vote in Washington DC And I wouldn’t say no could they?, he concluded? .

The vote was made possible by the Home Rule Act of 1973, which allows D.C. residents to elect their own mayor and council, but gives Congress the final say on bills passed by local leaders.

Amazingly, 41 Democrats crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans against the noncitizen voting bill. Thirty-one also crossed the aisle to reject the city’s new penal code. That was the good news.

The resolution to override the ballot bill was introduced by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer a month earlier.

“Voting is a pillar of American democracy and a constitutional right that must undeniably be protected and preserved for the citizens of this country. The DC Council’s reckless decision to allow non-US citizens and immigrants illegal the right to vote in local elections is an attack on the foundation of this republic,” he said in a statement at the time.

“This action by the Council is irresponsible and will only exacerbate the ongoing border crisis, subvert the voices of American citizens, and open the door for foreign adversaries to trade influence in our nation’s capital. Needless to say, only the Americans should have the power to influence local politics and direct their hard-earned taxpayer dollars toward important initiatives. Every member of Congress, Republican and Democrat alike, should strongly oppose to this radical effort by the DC Council and support this Joint Resolution,” he added.
