Group linked to George Soros accused of sending suspicious alerts to opposition leaders in India

The leader of the Information Technology Cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP IT), a department of the Indian political party, shared a tweet claiming that messages to opposition leaders that appeared to be from Apple warning that “state-sponsored attackers” may be targeting their iPhones. they are linked to billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

BJP IT chief Amit Malviya shared the thread focusing on the Access Now network, calling it a “sinister plot”.

The shared threat asked why Access Now was mentioned in Apple’s notification as a “DIGITAL SECURITY HELPLINE.” The thread noted that some politicians in India received the warning for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of phone hacking and spying.

There was a suggestion that the “hack warning” was not from Apple, but from the Soros-linked NGO.

Sanjeev Sanyal, best-selling author and senior economic adviser to the Government of India, tweeted: “The security threat messages some prominent Apple users are receiving are not from Apple but from an NGO linked to Soros named [Access Now]. How is this outside agency able to send such authentic messages? [through] the system??”

Ministers in the Modi-led government responded to the controversy on Tuesday by saying they would investigate the allegations and “get to the bottom of these notifications” after screenshots of the alert sent by Apple went viral on social media, the Independent reported.

“A parliamentary committee on information technology is considering summoning representatives of Apple India over alerts sent to public figures, an anonymous committee official was quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Wednesday,” the British newspaper reported. “The committee secretariat expressed ‘deep concern’ over the alerts and is treating the matter with the ‘utmost seriousness’, the official said.”
