Left-leaning pollster Nate Silver failed to predict that Donald Trump would defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2020 election, giving him a 72% chance of beating the artist-turned-politician who shocked the world .
Now, it turns out he’s the latest notable pundit to be axed in the latest round of ABC/Disney layoffs.
“Disney’s second round of layoffs hit ABC News on Tuesday, with Nate Silver’s data-driven journalism and politics brand FiveThirtyEight among those affected,” The Hollywood Reporter said. “ABC News is expected to maintain the FiveThirtyEight brand, with plans to streamline the site and make it more efficient.”
“ABC News remains dedicated to data journalism with a core focus on politics, economics and business reporting; this streamlined structure will allow us to be more aligned with our priorities for the 2024 election and beyond,” he said an ABC News spokesperson said in a statement. “We are grateful for the valuable contributions of the team members who will be leaving the organization and know they will continue to have an important impact on the future of journalism.”
In his Slack message, Silver wrote that “unfortunately the day we’ve been worrying about has arrived.”
“We don’t yet know the extent of these layoffs, exactly who is affected, or the terms on which they will leave, but it will be a tough day for everyone,” he added.
After the news of Silver’s departure, he tweeted about his tenure at ABC News and the layoffs.
“I had been worried about a result like this and so I’ve had some great initial conversations about opportunities elsewhere,” he explained. “Don’t hesitate to get in touch. I am very proud of the work of the FiveThirtyEight staff. It’s never been easy. I’m very sorry for the people affected by this.”
Silver’s dismissal comes in the wake of major changes in the media over the past two weeks. NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell resigned after confessing to an “inappropriate relationship” with a staffer, and CNN’s Don Lemon was fired after a tumultuous career at the network that included allegations of inappropriate behavior. Meanwhile, Fox News saw the departures of top talent Tucker Carlson and Dan Bongino, as well as “Tucker Carlson Tonight” executive producer Justin Wells.
It’s been a bloodbath for the media in recent weeks. And the word on the street is that it’s only going to get worse for those still in corporate media.
