AThe amendment pushed by Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to prevent President Joe Biden from selling oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve crashed and burned in a massive bipartisan defeat Thursday.
The amendment failed 14-418, with only 14 Republicans supporting it. In announcing the amendment, Greene accused Biden of being a threat to the nation’s national security and misleading and deceiving voters by withdrawing from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices. Obviously, not many other congressmen and congressmen agreed or thought the amendment prudent.

The stockpile was depleted after Biden ordered the emergency withdrawal of hundreds of millions of barrels of oil last year to help control high gasoline prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting increase in the price of oil.
However, last December the Energy Department said it would begin buying oil to replenish the stockpile after a drop in prices. On Monday, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said her agency could smoothly refill the emergency oil tank despite a lack of interest in an earlier purchase attempt.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a frequent Greene antagonist, had a laugh at the Georgia Republican’s expense after the failed amendment.
“Ugh. Even my psilocybin fix did better than that,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter, adding a sweaty emoji for good measure.

After steady declines since last summer’s peaks, gas prices have rebounded, with the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. sitting at $3.50, up from $3.10 a month ago and $3.34 a year ago, according to AAA.
