“Food miles” are measured in tonne-kilometres, which represents the transport of one tonne of goods by a given mode of transport (road, rail, air, sea, inland waterways, pipelines, etc.) in a distance of one kilometer. Poore and Nemecek (2018) report that of the 9.4 billion tonne-kilometres of global food transport, air freight accounted for only 15 million. This represents only 0.16% of the total; most food is transported by ship.
