Rescuers in India managed to save 41 workers who were trapped inside a collapsed tunnel for 17 days. The rescue operation, which involved drilling through 200 feet of debris, was a success thanks to the hard work and dedication of the rescuers.
The workers were trapped after a landslide caused the collapse of the Silkyara tunnel, which connects several Hindu pilgrimage sites across the Himalayas, on November 12.
Rescuers used an auger machine to drill horizontally through the debris, but the machine broke down on Monday.
Then they brought in “rat hole miners”, who are skilled at hand drilling.
Miners worked steadily for 24 hours to drill through the remaining 32 feet of rubble and were able to free the 41 workers.
The workers were taken to the hospital for checks and reunited with their families, who were anxiously awaiting their rescue.
