27 US lawmakers accuse Twitter of profiting from anti-Israel propaganda

27 American lawmakers have accused tech giant X, formerly known as Twitter, and its CEO, Elon Musk, of profiting from anti-Israel propaganda.

The lawmakers, all Democrats, wrote a letter to Musk and X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino expressing deep concern that the platform appeared to benefit financially from premium accounts that glorified violence against Israelis.

According to reports from non-profit organizations, people with X Premium accounts have been found to openly promote and glorify acts of violence against Israelis. This disturbing content not only violates the platform’s own policies, but also incites hatred and division.

This latest controversy adds to the ongoing battle between Musk, who acquired Twitter in October 2022, and those who advocate for better content moderation. X recently sued the watchdog group Media Matters for defamation after the organization published a report highlighting the appearance of advertisements for major brands alongside posts promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party.

The lawmakers emphasized in their letter that X’s financial benefit from these offensive publications is twofold, derived from both subscription fees and advertising revenue. They also noted that much of the flagged content remains live on the platform, even though it has been brought to the attention of investigators.

X has yet to respond to requests for comment on this matter.

Lawmakers noted that the United States designated Hamas a terrorist organization in 1997, making it illegal to knowingly provide material support or resources to the group. They emphasized that violent videos generated by Hamas are clearly included in these policies, as they bear the group’s official branding and iconography.

This development adds to growing concerns about X’s content moderation practices and its potential role in spreading harmful propaganda. As the platform continues to face backlash from advertisers and users, pressure is mounting on Musk and X to address these issues.
