Former President Donald Trump said he wants to reimpose a travel ban to prevent widespread unrest similar to those seen recently in France.
Donald Trump made the announcement in a campaign speech Friday in Iowa.
“When I return to office, the travel ban will be reinstated, even more extensive and robust than before,” Trump declared during his speech. “We must prevent our shopping centers and cities from being targeted by acts of terrorism, and we will not allow our farms to be looted. That’s just not going to happen.”
Riots erupted in France after the police shooting of a 17-year-old who resisted arrest during a traffic stop in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. The violence led to more than 180 arrests, with numerous buildings, including police stations and schools, torched.
Trump also explained how he intends to prevent the United States from suffering the same fate as France.
“I had warned Macron about this inevitable situation during our first meeting,” he said.
In May, Donald Trump had made a similar campaign announcement.

On January 28, 2017, Trump initially implemented a travel ban that affected seven countries with Muslim populations associated with terrorism. The Trump administration revised the order in September 2017 with Proclamation 9645 and added Venezuela and North Korea. The ban received a 5-4 approval by the Supreme Court in June 2018.
“We must also intensify our efforts to ensure that those who come to America share our values and assimilate into our culture,” Trump stressed to the audience in Council Bluffs, Iowa. “We do not want people entering our country who harbor hatred towards us; we wish those who love us”.
Trump later asked, “Who would stand for an open border, that would allow the world to pour in and allow the influx of mentally ill people or convicted felons into our nation? I mean, who would support that? How do we benefit?”
Rising immigration to prosperous countries has sparked a growing backlash around the world, fueling the growth of populist parties and pressuring governments to tighten immigration policies to stem the influx.
Numerous regions, including parts of Europe, Asia and Canada, have been actively encouraging more migrants to lower wages and counter population declines.
However, the surge in arrivals, along with an increase in illegal immigration to the United States and Europe, has raised concerns among more voters. The post-pandemic influx has led to social changes, with some people attributing increased crime rates and higher housing costs to immigrants.
The Dutch government collapsed on Friday after failing to reach an agreement on new measures aimed at restricting immigration, which has reached record levels. This has subsequently led to new elections scheduled for autumn.
Anti-immigrant parties have recently won power in Italy and Finland and have begun to support a minority government in Sweden. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party is currently leading the national polls.
About five million more people immigrated to rich countries last year than left, reflecting an 80 percent increase from pre-pandemic levels, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data. This increase can be attributed to the easing of Covid-related travel restrictions, increased labor shortages in developed countries and worsening economic conditions in the developing world.
Trump recently unveiled a new campaign proposal that seeks to ban individuals identified as “communists” and “Marxists” from entering the United States. Trump stated that he plans to use “Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act” to issue an order denying entry to all people associated with these ideologies.
This announcement resembles Trump’s previous travel ban targeting several predominantly Muslim countries during his first term. The previous ban drew significant criticism for its perceived anti-Muslim stance and was eventually overturned by President Joe Biden.
During a speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, Trump emphasized the importance of immigrants loving the country they want to call home. “Those who come to enjoy our country must love our country,” he said.
