Dam failure: Lawmaker says 'Get out if you can'

Residents of Nashville, a small town in southern Illinois, were advised evacuate immediately on Tuesday due to an imminent dam failure.

Washington County emergency officials alerted locals, asking them to leave their homes immediately to avoid the consequences of the catastrophic situation.

Nashville residents were told they could seek shelter at a location on West Walnut Street in the city, where the Red Cross was providing assistance.

The Washington County Emergency Management Agency alerted residents via a Facebook post that read: “Attention, Nashville Dam failure is imminent! Please evacuate your home at this moment. If you are in the gray box, you must evacuate now!”

However, at the time of the evacuation order, the cause of the dam failure and the estimated number of homes affected were unknown.

According to the last census, the population of Nashville is about 3,100 people. It is not known how many residents had to evacuate their homes.

Tennessee residents in the area have been advised to monitor the situation carefully and stay alert for the latest information provided by local officials.
