Car crash kills migrants at Brownsville, Texas border

A car crashed into a crowd of people in a Texas border town early Sunday morning, killing seven people.

Around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, a car crashed into a group of pedestrians in Brownsville, Texas. Police said seven people died and six people are being treated for serious and minor injuries.

The police arrested the driver of the vehicle. He was the only person in the car. The driver is reportedly being tested for alcohol and drugs.

ABC News reported, “The driver is in the hospital being treated and under 24-hour surveillance, police said.”

The Brownsville Police Department said the driver was charged with reckless driving, but more charges could come as the investigation continues.

The vehicle appears to be a gray Range Rover, which had extensive damage.

Investigators did not say whether the crash was intentional or whether the driver had a motive.

Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department told Fox News that it had been confirmed that migrants were among the victims.

A Brownsville Police Department representative told ABC News that the crash happened near a bus stop and the Ozanam Center in Brownsville.

The Ozanam Center is a migrant and homeless shelter that provides “housing to the homeless, regardless of sex, color, creed and national origin.” The center welcomes and feeds up to 200 people in need.

Brownsville is a popular destination for illegal immigrants entering the country from Mexico.
