Biden Advocates for Free Community College After Taking It Off the Table Last Year

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden announced a new plan to make community college tuition free for all Americans. The proposal, which Biden had previously taken off the table during his 2020 presidential campaign, is part of a larger plan to make higher education more affordable and accessible for all.

Under Biden’s plan, Americans with an income of up to $125,000 a year would be eligible for free tuition at community colleges. The plan would also provide additional funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

The proposal is part of Biden’s $1.8 trillion American Families Plan, which he outlined in a speech to Congress on Wednesday. The plan also includes investments in childcare, paid family and medical leave, and other initiatives to help working families.

Biden’s plan for free community college tuition comes after he had previously taken it off the table during his 2020 presidential campaign. In 2019, Biden had proposed a plan to make two-year community college tuition free for all Americans, but he later removed the proposal from his platform.

While some experts have praised Biden’s new plan, others have criticized it for not going far enough. Some have argued that the plan does not address the rising cost of four-year colleges and universities, and that the $125,000 income cap is too low.

Nevertheless, Biden’s plan is still a step in the right direction for making higher education more accessible and affordable for all Americans. By providing free tuition at community colleges, Biden is making it easier for students to pursue higher education and gain the skills they need to succeed in the modern economy.
