A 12-year-old girl is facing assault charges after she allegedly threw acid at another girl in a Detroit park.

Deaira Summers, who is just 11 years old, was having a good time with her mother in the playground when the older girl unexpectedly doused her with acid. Deaira ended up with second and third degree burns on her arms, legs and back. She was rushed to a children’s hospital, where she spent four days receiving treatment for her injuries.

Authorities are still trying to figure out what exactly drove the other girl to commit this violent act and where she got the acid.

Prosecutors charged the 12-year-old with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and felonious assault on Saturday and set bail at $10,000.

Deaira was an “innocent bystander” in a confrontation between his cousin and the 12-year-old boy, his mother said, a dispute that had started the day before. Deaira left but dropped her bag and was hit by the acid when she returned to retrieve it.

“I feel like it was the worst thing you could do to a kid,” Summers said.

“I hope she gets what she deserves, and everyone gets what they deserve,” Deaira told the news station, which showed images of the girl’s legs with burn marks.

“How does a kid think of bringing acid to the park?” added Dominique Summers, who believes an adult was also responsible for the alleged attack. Authorities have not said where the acid might have come from.

“Whoever was involved with her, I wish they were all arrested for what they did to my daughter,” Summers said.

When asked if there are plans to charge any adults in the case, Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Maria Miller told HuffPost that “other aspects of the case remain under investigation.”
