The Senate passed major nuclear energy legislation on Tuesday, sending the bill to President Joe Biden's desk.
The upper house of the legislature passed the Fire Safety and Grants Act, a bill containing the text of the pro-nuclear ADVANCE Act, by a strong 88-2 bipartisan vote The bill represents one of the most significant efforts in recent years by Congress to boost the nation's nuclear power infrastructure and capacity, as well as a rare moment of consensus between Democrats and Republicans on energy policy during the first term by Biden.

“Today, we sent the ADVANCE Act to the president's desk because Congress worked together to recognize the importance of nuclear power to America's future and got the job done,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, the top Republican legislator for the Senate Environment. and the Public Works Committee and a key player in the negotiations, said of the approval of the bill. “This bipartisan legislation will encourage more innovation and investment in nuclear technologies right here on our shores. It also directs the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to more efficiently carry out its important regulatory mission and helps rebuild conventional energy sites for future nuclear power projects”.
Nuclear power is emission-free and reliable, meaning it's a reasonable choice for Republicans, many of whom are staunchly opposed to Biden's $1 trillion-plus climate. scheduleand Democrats, who are mostly opposed to significantly increasing reliance on other reliable fuel sources such as coal or natural gas.
