Despite Trump Leading in Multiple Primary Polls, NYT Reports Top GOP Elites Don’t Support Trump in 2024

Donald Trump may be leading in multiple primary polls for the 2024 election, but according to a recent report from The New York Times, top Republican elites are not supporting his potential run.

The report, which was based on interviews with more than two dozen party officials, donors and strategists, found that many of the GOP’s most influential figures have no interest in backing Trump in the next election cycle.

The news comes as no surprise to many, given the former president’s tumultuous four years in office. Trump’s unpopularity among Republican voters has been well-documented, and many of the party’s most prominent figures have been vocal in their opposition to his policies and rhetoric.

Trump’s standing in the polls, however, has been buoyed by his loyal base of supporters, who have remained steadfast in their devotion to the former president. Despite the widespread disapproval of many in the GOP, Trump continues to lead in multiple primary polls, with the most recent survey from Politico/Morning Consult finding that he is the preferred candidate of 40 percent of Republican voters.

While Trump’s poll numbers may be strong, the report from The New York Times indicates that the GOP’s top elites are not interested in his candidacy.

According to the report, Republican officials, donors and strategists are instead turning to a number of other potential candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The report also found that many of the GOP’s top officials are wary of the potential for a Trump candidacy to further divide the party. While Trump’s base of supporters remains loyal, many of the party’s other factions have been alienated by his rhetoric and policies.

Trump’s potential run has also been met with concern from some of the party’s top donors, who are wary of the potential for a costly and divisive primary season.

The report also found that many of the GOP’s top officials are hoping to avoid a repeat of the 2020 election cycle, in which Trump’s candidacy was seen as a major factor in the party’s loss.

While the report from The New York Times indicates that many of the GOP’s top elites are not interested in backing Trump in the next election cycle, it is still too early to tell if the former president will decide to run in 2024.

Trump has not yet made a firm decision on whether or not he will run, and it is likely that he will wait until closer to the election to make a final decision.

In the meantime, the GOP’s top officials and donors are looking to other potential candidates to lead the party in the next election cycle. While Trump may be leading in the polls, it appears that the party’s top elites are not interested in backing his potential run.
