In the wake of the tragedy, many families and victims sought justice and sought answers to the questions of who was responsible. But for those in East Palestine, Ohio, the search for answers has been particularly urgent.
That’s because East Palestine is the hometown of attorney Kenneth Feinberg, the man tasked with overseeing the distribution of funds from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Feinberg has been in East Palestine for the past few weeks to spread an urgent message to the community: if you were affected by the attacks, you need to register for the fund and submit a claim for compensation.
Feinberg, a Harvard-educated lawyer and former special master of the Agent Orange settlement fund, was appointed by Congress in 2002 to oversee the fund. He has since been responsible for distributing billions of dollars in compensation to victims and their families.
But, he says, many people in East Palestine are still unaware of the fund and its benefits. “I’m here to make sure that everyone in East Palestine knows that if they were affected by the 9/11 attacks, they can still register for the fund and receive compensation,” he said in a recent interview.
Feinberg is also concerned that many people in East Palestine may not be aware of the deadlines for submitting a claim. He urges those affected to act quickly, as the deadline for submitting a claim is fast approaching.
Feinberg has been traveling around East Palestine, visiting local schools and churches to spread the word about the fund and its benefits. He has also been meeting with families affected by the attacks to discuss their options and provide advice on how to submit a claim.
Feinberg’s message is simple: if you were affected by the 9/11 attacks, you need to register for the fund and submit a claim for compensation. He urges those affected to act quickly, as the deadline for submitting a claim is fast approaching.
