Schmidt previously went to Tokyo for the pandemic-delayed 2021 Summer Games, but did not compete and later announced plans to “take a break” from athletics in August 2021. He expressed his dissatisfaction with his performance and the challenges he faced throughout the year. .

Schmidt, 25, expressed his excitement for the Olympic season after qualifying for the 4x400m medley relay at the world athletics relays in May.

Earlier this year, Schmidt claimed to have turned down a six-figure offer from a “well-known” backer as he wasn't completely sold on the company. He revealed that he earns income mainly through social media, personal endorsements and partnerships, supplemented by a modest salary as a member of the German national team.

The influencer revealed that she and her teammates receive a monthly stipend equivalent to $739 USD through sponsorship deals facilitated by Germany's sports aid foundation. He also mentioned that athletes can access additional funds through their teams and organizations, as well as prize money secured during races.

Schmidt, who also pursues distance learning, has ventured into the modeling industry, walking the runway at Milan Fashion Week 2023 with his own clothing line in collaboration with fashion Hugo Boss.
