Following President Joe Biden's decision not to seek re-election in 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the favorite to become the Democratic Party's nominee for president. This has led to a flurry of speculation about who could serve as Harris' running mate. With the Democratic National Convention just 28 days away, the search for the vice presidential nominee is in full swing.
Potential candidates include North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. These people, along with about seven others, have been asked to provide information about their finances, family history and other personal details.
Governor Shapiro, who won a landslide victory in 2022, has been touted as a potential presidential prospect and is also considered a potential running mate for Harris. Harris has already praised Shapiro as a “great partner for the president and for me.”
Governor Cooper, who leads a crucial battleground state, has clashed with lawmakers over issues such as abortion rights and voting rights. Despite this, he has managed to achieve one of his top priorities, expanding Medicaid to low-income adults, making North Carolina the 40th state to do so.
Senator Kelly, a nationally recognized former astronaut, has been a reliable supporter of the Democratic Party's priorities. He has occasionally broken with his party, most notably when he referred to the influx of undocumented migrants at the US southern border as a “crisis.”
Other potential running mates include Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Each of these individuals brings a unique set of experiences and strengths to the table, making the decision difficult for Harris.
As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the speculation will only intensify. One thing is clear, however: Who Harris picks as his running mate will play a crucial role in the 2024 presidential race.
