During a heated election cycle, mudslinging is often elevated to a spectator sport, but there are times when the burlesque strategy can defy all logic and backfire: to a great extent.
Even with an embarrassing assist from CNN, President Joe Biden discovered this weekend that the fine line between smart and cringe-worthy is as difficult to navigate as a flight of stairs.
On Friday, the Biden-Harris HQ account at X posted a CNN segment claiming that the president's childish digs at Donald Trump have “sanded” the former president.
With a catastrophe unfolding at the border, rising crime in America's struggling cities and the threat of World War III looming over the nation, the president's official campaign account quoted CNN saying, “Biden's campaign aides have said the mockery will continue. ,”

On its own, the post drew mocking memes:

But when Biden reposted the clip with a jab at former first lady Melania Trump, the response was merciless.
“Be the best,” the president said, a reference to Melania's anti-cyberbullying campaign.
Because nothing says “leadership” like bullying an anti-cyberbullying movement.
“This tweet was not posted by Joe Biden. Everyone knows Biden goes to bed at 4 p.m. and this was posted after 6 p.m.,” said Jason Miller, Trump's top adviser. Fox News Digital in a statement. “But to the staff who posted this on behalf of Biden, maybe you should focus more on reducing inflation and fixing the mess you've created on our southern border instead of trying to be nice.”
“What 20-year-old clerk wrote that for you, old man?” one user asked X. “You can barely work a toaster, let alone social media.”
“This is a really good look,” said another. “I'm glad there are kids running Joe's Twitter account.”
What 20 year old employee wrote this for you old man? You can barely operate a toaster, let alone social media.

Biden's post was seen as particularly classless considering Melania Trump is currently mourning the death of her mother.

So much for DECENCY being at the polls. You're not trolling President Trump, you crazy old man. You are trolling the former First Lady, who lost her mother days ago. You are a pig! @POTUS

“Too late to learn to troll, Joe,” one user told the president. “You will not win this battle.”
It's too late to learn to troll, Joe. You will not win this battle.
