'What a shame!' DOJ seeks jail term for former Trump aide Peter Navarro, crickets at Hunter Biden

-

President Joe Biden's Justice Department is looking to put former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro behind bars.

Federal prosecutors are seeking a six-month prison sentence and a $200,000 fine for former President Trump's trade adviser after he defied a 2022 congressional subpoena from the now-dissolved House select committee investigating the riot on January 6, 2021 at the United States Capitol.

This act “deserves a severe punishment”, according to the filing on the sentencing of Navarro, who was convicted last year of two counts of contempt of Congress and will be sentenced on January 25.

“The mandatory minimum sentence of one month in prison is insufficient to account for, punish and deter the defendant's criminal offenses,” federal prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta. “For each count, the Court should impose a six-month prison sentence (the upper end of the applicable Guidelines advisory sentencing range) and fine the defendant $100,000.”

“The rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 did not just attack a building, they attacked the rule of law upon which this country was built and through which it endures. By ignoring the subpoena of the Committee and his authority to investigate the assault, the defendant aggravated the assault, following the attack on Congress with his rejection of his authority,” prosecutors said in the 20-page filing that also stated : “The defendant chose loyalty to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law.”

“Respect for the rule of law is essential to the functioning of the United States government and to preserving the liberty and good order that this country has enjoyed for more than two centuries,” they argued. “Defendant's bad faith strategy of defiance and contempt deserves severe punishment.”

Navarro's lawyers issued their own memo before the sentencing.

“Despite the government's effort to label Dr. Navarro as a rebel, the reality is that his conviction arises solely from a conviction for his refusal to comply with the summons of the Selective Committee and has nothing to do with the events that occurred at the Capitol in January. 6, 2021,” the lawyers wrote.

“Navarro's actions do not stem from a lack of respect for the law, or from any belief that he is above the law,” he wrote. “Rather, Dr. Navarro acted because he reasonably believed he had a duty to assert executive privilege on behalf of former President Trump.”

“Dr. Navarro's sentence should reflect the tenor of the law that led to his conviction,” the lawyers told the judge. “Accordingly, Dr. Navarro respectfully requests that the Court sentence him to no more than six months of probation on each count, to run concurrently, and to pay a $100 fine on each count.”

Complaints on social media about Biden's armed DOJ efforts had a common theme.
