WATCH: Manchin criticizes Biden on the Inflation Reduction Act and debt ceiling negotiations

Senator Joe Manchin (d-WV) slammed President Joe Biden and his administration on Monday, accusing them of breaking “their word to the American public” about the Inflation Reduction Act and chastising the president’s failure to negotiate the ceiling debt to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). .

Discussing the Inflation Reduction Act during his appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, Manchin went so far as to say he would repeal the legislation because, he says, the Biden administration is not living up to its word.

WHITE HOUSE BACKS MANCHIN’S CRITICISMS ON DEBT CEILING NEGOTIATIONS

The Biden administration is breaking its word to the American public by ignoring the text of the #InflationReduction Act to pursue its radical climate agenda. “This legislation was balanced. In the next ten years, we will have enough fossil fuel to run our country and help our allies around the world. We will also invest in new technologies for the future. Now, the Biden administration has completely ignored,” Manchin told Sean Hannity.

Manchin claimed the bill was about energy security, but he hasn’t heard the White House refer to it once since the bill was passed, only talking about the environment.

“Let me be very clear. If the administration doesn’t follow through on what they said they would do and continue to liberalize what we’re supposed to invest in over the next ten years, I will do everything in my power to prevent let that happen. And if they don’t change, I would vote to repeal my own bill,” Manchin said.

The West Virginia senator also used his time on the popular cable news show to criticize Biden for his failure to figure out the debt ceiling with House Republicans.

Of Biden, he said: “He can’t play Russian roulette with the debt ceiling and the debt. That would be disastrous for our economy and for the American people … this is America, not the states divided. get into a room and resolve our differences for the good of our country.”

Manchin and the White House have had their fair share of differences in recent months, with the debt ceiling being the most recent cause of discord. Last week, Manchin claimed that Biden showed a “deficiency in leadership” by not meeting with McCarthy and “compromising” on the debt ceiling.

The West Virginia Democrat even wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal late last month denouncing Biden’s “betrayal” of the Inflation Reduction Act and explaining how it affects the debt ceiling.

McCarthy has failed to win support from his entire caucus for his plan to raise the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion over the next year or through March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. The debt ceiling, or the maximum amount the federal government can borrow, will need to be raised or abolished sometime this summer to avoid a debt default.

Economists have warned that a default would have disastrous consequences on the economy. Biden has not budged in three months on his refusal to negotiate on the debt limit, and White House officials have criticized McCarthy and House Republicans for demanding that spending negotiations be tied to the increase of the debt ceiling.
