Washington Examiner editorial board calls on Scott, Christie, Ramaswamy to ‘get out now’

-

In an op-ed published Sunday, the Washington Examiner’s editorial board called for GOP presidential candidates Tim Scott, Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy to drop out of the race.

Why them in particular? Because their candidacies for office supposedly increase former President Donald Trump’s chances of winning the Republican presidential primary, which cannot happen, according to the board, because Trump is a loser.

“Since Trump became the party leader, Republicans have lost the House, the Senate and the White House. Republicans have also lost control of more governors’ mansions and more state legislatures since Trump came to power . Electorally, Trump has been an ongoing disaster for the Republican Party. If Republicans are tired of losing, and they should be, the solution is easy: move on from Trump,” the board wrote.

But that can’t be achieved if Trump wins the GOP presidential primary, which is why the board believes the lowest-performing candidates should be bumped up to give more room to non-Trump candidates who have a good performance

“Every candidate running against Trump understands what a disaster it would be if he were at the top of the ticket again in 2024. That’s why they’re in the race. And they also refuse to acknowledge that by staying in the race, they are helping Trump get the nomination,” the board argued.

“His lead is strong in national polls, but Republican presidential primaries are decided state by state, with Trump not above 50% support in either of the first two contests. The latest Des Moines Register poll had him only in 43% in Iowa, and the latest St. Anselm poll had him at 45% in New Hampshire,” they continued.

Those numbers are relevant, the board argued, because if Trump were to lose Iowa and New Hampshire, his standing in the race “would sink.” And that is why, according to the board, it has focused its attacks on only the two leading candidates: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

While both candidates continue to do well in the polls, the board said, the other three have failed and dropped.

“In New Hampshire, where former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was once in double digits, he’s down to just 6 percent. And this is his best state. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) , in his home state of South Carolina, trails Haley badly, 22 percent to 6 percent. If Scott can’t win his own state, he has no chance of getting the nomination. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy doesn’t is competitive in any primary state. No matter what he does, he is not winning the support of Republican primary voters,” they wrote.

“If Christie, Scott and Ramaswamy believe that the party needs new leadership, as they claim, and that voters across the country deserve better than a rematch between the 80-year-old incumbent and his 77-year-old predecessor, they should Show it by leaving the primaries immediately and let DeSantis and Haley finish the fight against Trump,” they concluded.

The problem with the opinion is that polls show Trump crushing President Joe Biden, which means he might not be such a loser after all.

A recent poll by Bloomberg News and Morning Consult found Biden leading in several key swing states where voters have rejected the current president’s #Bidenomics agenda.

“Trump, the front-runner for the GOP nomination, leads Biden 47 percent to 43 percent among voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The results of those seven states had a margin of error of 1 percentage point,” Bloomberg reported earlier this month.

This is impressive. So is the fact that a remarkable 51 percent of these swing-state voters believe Trump’s economy was superior to Biden’s. A similar percentage, 49 to 35, would trust the former president more than the current president. Specifically among independent voters, Trump has an even larger lead of 22 points on this issue.

Even the left-wing media has admitted that Trump is crushing it.

“Based on two sets of polls from Bloomberg/Morning Consult and one from the New York Times/Siena and Emerson, it’s pretty clear that Donald Trump has a lead over Joe Biden in most of the key battleground states of 2024”. New York the magazine reported Friday.

“Separate polls also show him entering with a small lead in the national popular vote (losing 2.1 percent in 2016 and 4.5 percent in 2020),” the report continued.
