The House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kamala Harris' running mate, over his “long-standing connections” to China and entities linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). That investigation, led by committee chairman James Comer (R-KY), aims to uncover the extent of Walz's involvement with Chinese officials and organizations that may have influenced his decisions during his tenure as governor, as reported. Fox News.
In a letter obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, Comer briefed FBI Director Christopher Wray on the committee's investigation into Walz, saying the watchdog is conducting a broad review of warfighting operations. CCP policy against the United States. Comer stressed that these operations target federal agencies and influential US figures, seeking to co-opt them to benefit China's authoritarian regime.

The investigation gained momentum after the FBI briefed the committee on April 22 and July 17, before Walz was named Harris' running mate. During these briefings, the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force highlighted activities closely aligned with those now linked to Governor Walz. Comer is now seeking detailed information from the FBI about Walz's interactions with Chinese entities and any warnings or tips the FBI may have issued to him about CCP influence operations.
Comer has expressed serious concerns about Walz's “longstanding connections with CCP-connected entities and officials,” warning that such ties could make Walz susceptible to the CCP's elite capture strategy. This tactic seeks to manipulate key figures in political, cultural and academic circles to influence US policies in favor of the communist regime, undermining American interests.
Citing reports, Comer noted Walz's extensive engagement with CCP officials during his public service, raising red flags about possible CCP influence in his decision-making as governor. If elected vice president, these ties could pose significant risks to national security. Specifically, Comer referenced Walz's role as a professor in the early 1990s, where he allegedly organized a student trip to China, funded by the Chinese government. In addition, Walz founded a private company, “Educational Travel Adventures, Inc.,” which coordinated annual student trips to China until 2003. The company was dissolved just four days after Walz took over as congressman in 2007.
Adding to the suspicions, Comer noted that Walz has traveled to China approximately 30 times. The committee's investigation underscores the critical importance of US officials being vigilant against the CCP's efforts to exert political and psychological influence that could threaten national security.
Comer also highlighted Walz's tenure as a fellow at Macau Polytechnic University, a Chinese institution with a self-proclaimed “devotion to the motherland.” At the time, Walz was dealing with significant credit card debt, and in 2019, he headlined the National Convention for the US-China People's Friendship Association in Minnesota. At the event, Walz spoke alongside the president of a Chinese organization that the State Department later identified as a CCP front tasked with influencing local and state leaders in the US.
Comer drew attention to Walz's admission that he does not see China as a confrontational relationship, despite the bipartisan consensus on the need to counter the CCP's influence in America. The committee is particularly concerned about Walz's meeting with Chinese Consul General Zhao Jian in March 2024 to discuss China-US relations and subnational cooperation. Despite being aware of the CCP's human rights violations, Walz has publicly praised certain aspects of China's governance, raising further doubts about his stance on China.
The House Oversight Committee has now requested the FBI's assistance in gathering documents and information related to Walz's interactions with Chinese entities. The committee is also seeking records of any communications between the FBI and Walz or his government office about possible CCP influence.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Comer warned that the CCP has systematically targeted every aspect of American life, including elected officials, in its efforts to undermine America. He urged Americans to be deeply concerned about Governor Walz's “cozy relationship” with China, noting his frequent visits to the country and connections with CCP-linked institutions. Comer stressed that the American people deserve to know the full extent of Walz's ties to China, especially as he runs for the vice presidency.
