The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office reported that the victims, Robert John McGuire, 77, Gregory Scott Powell, 60, and Carol Anne Reese, 65, were found with serious blunt force trauma injuries, described as by the authorities as “heinous”.

Venable's capture occurred on I-86 in Steuben County, New York. US Marshals and New York State Police intervened after she refused to stop for law enforcement officers. At approximately 5:45 p.m., state troopers saw Venable driving a gray 2009 Honda Civic, a vehicle he was known to use. When she failed to comply with his orders to stop, a high-speed chase ensued, reaching speeds of 100 mph.

The pursuit ended when police deployed a tire deflation device, causing Venable's vehicle to crash. She was then arrested and taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Authorities had previously warned that Venable was armed and dangerous. New York State Police are currently processing a fugitive warrant for Venable and arranging his extradition to Virginia. He faces charges of three counts of second-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Neighbors in the 10500 block of White Street Court, where the victims lived, described them as quiet individuals who kept to themselves. They noted that Venable had moved into the home about a month ago. In addition, Venable had a recent charge of misdemeanor assault and battery last month. Authorities are investigating whether this earlier incident is related to the triple homicide.
