The incident began around 3:22 p.m. when police were called to assist child protective services on Arcadia Street in the Ingleside neighborhood of Norfolk. Upon arrival, officers encountered a belligerent woman outside the residence. During this engagement, a male suspect came out of the home and began shooting at the officers, striking one officer several times.
The officers returned fire and seriously wounded the suspect. He was taken to the hospital and remained there Saturday night.
Chief Talbot highlighted the bravery of the officers, stating: “Today's shooting is yet another reminder of the dangers involved in the work Norfolk police officers do every day to keep the city and its residents safe. This afternoon officers were called to deal with a volatile situation that quickly escalated despite significant steps taken by officers to de-escalate.But we can all be thankful that it wasn't much worse exactly what they were trained for, which was nothing short of heroic. They put themselves in harm's way so the others didn't have to. We are thankful that our officer, who was shot several times, survived his injuries, and We all owe a debt of gratitude for the bravery and professionalism shown by all the officers involved.”
Talbot also assured the public that the child involved in the CPS case is safe and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident and all officers involved are on administrative duties pending the outcome.
