A pro-Palestinian protest in Los Angeles on Sunday sparked violent clashes with pro-Israeli counter-protesters outside a local synagogue, prompting condemnation from President Joe Biden. The protest was in response to a real estate event held at the synagogue that was seen as promoting the sale of homes in Gaza. The event was advertised as providing information on “housing projects in all of Israel's best English neighborhoods,” prompting a backlash on social media.
Protesters reportedly tried to prevent people from entering the synagogue, with mace and bear spray allegedly used against Jews. The Los Angeles Police Department intervened, deploying 60 officers to remove protesters from the synagogue. The situation escalated when pro-Israel protesters arrived, causing violent altercations. Two assault charges and one arrest for handling a spiked stick were made, with investigations ongoing.
President Biden, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the clashes. Mayor Bass announced increased patrols in the Pico-Robertson area and at Los Angeles houses of worship. He declared, “Los Angeles will not be a haven for anti-Semitism and violence,” and promised that those responsible would be held accountable.
The Palestinian Youth Movement, which organized the protest, has also held demonstrations in Manhattan, the White House and a Parliament building in Ottawa this month. Pro-Palestinian protests have become widespread, moving from university campuses to city streets and government buildings after the end of the academic year.
