Venezuela bans main opposition candidate from election as democratic model looms

-

The Venezuelan government has banned the main opposition candidate from participating in the country's elections.

Last week, Venezuela's Supreme Court judges loyal to the Latin American country's despotic socialist leader Nicolás Maduro blocked the presidential bid of María Corina Machado, who overwhelmingly won the opposition primary in October. a measure that has generated widespread condemnation.

Machado would have had a good chance of ousting Maduro on a level playing field, but he has been barred from running for fifteen years, which is less than the permanent ban US Democrats are seeking against the Republican party leader Donald J. Trump using a controversial civilian. Wartime provision of the 14th Amendment to claim that he incited an “insurrection” on January 6, 2021.

The ban comes as the Biden regime has eased sanctions on Venezuela's oil and gas industry that could now be reimposed following the banana republic's move by Maduro's allies.

“The January 26 decision by the Supreme Court of Venezuela to disqualify the winner of the democratic opposition primaries Maria Corina Machado is incompatible with the commitment of Nicolás Maduro's representatives to hold a competitive Venezuelan presidential election in 2024. The reinstatement process lacked basic elements, as Machado was neither given a copy of the allegations against her nor given an opportunity to respond to those allegations,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in one statement issued after the judgment.

“The decision by the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela to uphold the disqualifications of @MariaCorinaYA and @hcapriles undermines a competitive presidential election. Based on this action and the targeting of the opposition and civil society, the US is reviewing the our sanctions policy,” Miller wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

But X users threw the regime's hypocrisy back in the spox's face, pointing out that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Trump currently faces multiple lawsuits and has been kicked off the ballot in two states with more to follow, depending on how the US Supreme Court rules next month, giving critics reason to argue that the The Biden administration is in no position to lecture anyone on democracy. process
