US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is warning its agents to be on the lookout for homemade explosive devices after the Mexican military seized 10 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during a shootout with cartels on the border.
A Dec. 13 internal officer security alert shared by a federal law enforcement source with FOX Business Network is warning CBP agents to be “vigilant,” the outlet reported Friday.
Agents must “exercise caution and report any possible armed subject approaching the border with possible explosive devices,” the memo says.

Mexican authorities discovered the IEDs after Tucson Border Patrol agents responded to shots fired at the US-Mexico border. A supervising Border Patrol agent in Tucson arrested a person on the US side who was carrying a loaded AK-47, two loaded AK magazines, a handgun and loose ammunition.
According to a FOX Business source, the incident began with what was essentially a gang shootout over control of a gap in the border fence of a ranch known to be used to smuggle drugs into the United States.
“Now it's a magnet for the cartel to push people around,” Hillary Vaughn told host Maria Bartiromo on FOX Business' “Mornings With Maria.”
“Border Patrol agents basically stumbled into a turf cartel shooting” near the ranch, Vaughn explained.
The arrested individual told officers that “there were eleven armed suspects nearby,” he reported.
After hearing gunshots from the Mexican side of the border, officers “withdrew to a safer area.”
“The Mexican military responded,” Vaughn said. “That's when they found the ten explosive devices filled with black powder and shrapnel.”
The gap in the fence was “a spot on the border wall that was never completed,” he said, citing a source.
“It also shows how dangerous it is becoming for our law enforcement officers at the border,” Vaughn told Bartiromo, “but also how lucrative human trafficking is for the cartel, which they're willing to have these shootings over little loopholes on the border.” he's closing it to try to take control and use it as a way to push his people, his paying customers.
Vaughn stressed that the cartel was not throwing asylum-seeking migrants with explosive devices and sending them to the US border.
“This was not a situation where it was placed on a migrant, but he was coming across the border,” he said. “It never made it to the U.S. side. This is just something that the cartels had on hand. This was not something that was used against Border Patrol agents or used in an effort to cross the border”.
“What it does speak to,” he said, “is, really, how the cartel works and how valuable and everything they're willing to do to protect their business, which, a lot of their business now, is getting people across the border. So they're willing to fight to the end to control these little gaps in the border fence so that they're the only ones pushing people over to the side of the United States, their clients.”
“CBP's warning comes as Republicans are pushing for more border security measures to be included in President Biden's $106 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine,” reports FOX Business. “GOP border hawks have demanded that any aid package include the entirety of HR 2 — the House's signature legislation passed in the chamber this year that increases border security, restarts border wall construction, restores policy to remain in Mexico and limits the use of asylum and humanitarian parole among other radical changes”.
President Biden and Senate Democrats rejected the bill, arguing that it would “cut off nearly all access to humanitarian protections in a manner inconsistent with our nation's values and international obligations.”
“Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Tuesday was another day when overwhelmed officials at the border encountered more than 10,000 migrants in a single day.”
