US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has attributed recent civilian casualties in Palestine to the actions of Hamas during a hostage rescue operation carried out by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Sullivan stated that Hamas' tactics of operating within densely populated civilian areas and using these areas for military purposes puts the Palestinian people in the line of fire, causing significant loss of life.
Gaza's health ministry, run by Hamas, reported that the Israeli operation, aimed at rescuing four hostages, killed 274 Palestinians and left hundreds more injured. The ministry did not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties, but noted that the death toll included several minors. However, these figures remain unverified.
Sullivan expressed that the US supports a negotiated settlement for the release of the hostages. He further stated that the current proposal presented by Israel, which is awaiting a response from Hamas, is the most effective and reliable method to ensure the release of the hostages.
In addition, Sullivan urged the international community to insist that Hamas accept the terms of the proposed deal. This call to action underscores ongoing efforts to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of the hostages, while highlighting the complex and volatile nature of the conflict in the region.
