He takes cover behind his car before returning fire as the passing vehicle drives away.
Screams can be heard from members of his household as they come out the front door to check on Taveras.
He released a statement on Instagram, where he expressed his frustration with local law enforcement's response to the incident, citing an apathetic attitude toward the problem of gun violence in Jacksonville.
Taveras stated: “On Monday, July 29, 2024, at 10:05 p.m., a group of armed men approached my mother's house and tried to take my life. By the grace of God, I escaped unscathed and was able to grab my own firearm and return fire in self-defense. This city is unforgiving and it's worse that JSO does nothing to correct the problem.”
Taveras revealed in his statement that his brother was also killed by gun violence in 2019, and his brother's killers remain at large.
He believes that both cases have not received the attention they deserve.
The bantamweight said many other families face similar situations in Jacksonville, and he believes local law enforcement is indifferent to the increase in violence.
