Two teenagers arrested, one shot as Long Island's seniors' jump day ends in gunfire

A teenager was shot during an impromptu “Senior Skip Day” event that turned into a huge teen party in Long Island, New York.

Social media messages prompted thousands of Long Island students to leave school Thursday and head to the beach, according to the local station. WPIX.

The result? More than 2,000 students gathered in Long Beach doing everything from lounging to, of course, twerking on police cars, as usual.

Long Beach police reportedly tried to shut down the party, but were outnumbered and had to call Nassau County police for help.

“Witnesses [said] that police tried to move the crowd from the beach to East Park Avenue, where shots rang out,” according to the local station. SHE DOES.

“The next thing you hear is one shot and then several more,” a witness told the station. “All we see is a flash and we see a group of girls start running. All we see is a couple of people stumbling.”

A 16-year-old was shot in the torso. Two other teenagers were later arrested, and one of them, a 15-year-old, was charged with attempted assault, reckless endangerment, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a large capacity ammunition device. .

“There was a large group of young people on our beach early today, over 2,000,” a Long Beach police officer later recalled to station WNYW. “The group was dispersed by the Long Beach Police Department with assistance from the Nassau County Police Department.”

“Segments of the group entered the area of Edwards Boulevard and Park Avenue and the individual was shot. This person was taken to the hospital and is being treated,” he added.

Residents say these kinds of loud, out-of-control parties are now an annual thing.

“There's always these big parties at the beach,” resident Brian Beck told WPIX, adding that this was the third year in a row that a “Senior Skip Day” party broke out at the beach.

Unfortunately, violent gatherings of teenagers like this have become a dime a dozen, with the last major one occurring months earlier in Chicago, where one teenager was killed and another injured.

That rally turned violent around 7:40 p.m. when, after hearing two shots, the officers “found two victims with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a bank when they arrived at the scene,” according to the 'local station WFLD.

“A 17-year-old boy was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and neck and was pronounced dead. A 15-year-old boy was also taken to Stroger Hospital. He was shot in the leg and was in normal condition,” according to the station.

This incident came almost exactly a year after another large gathering of teenagers in downtown Chicago turned violent, leaving two people shot.

The teenagers reportedly came out to riot/protest against not being allowed into Millennium Park. Meanwhile, as the teenagers jumped on the cars and smashed their windows, two other teenagers nearby were non-fatally shot and taken to a hospital for treatment.

“Police said a 16-year-old boy was shot in the arm and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both victims were taken to Northwestern Hospital in fair condition,” local station WLS reported .

“It's heartbreaking, kids are fighting, chasing each other, some of them have guns. It's really heartbreaking when one of them gets hurt, and that's unfortunate, it happened last night,” said a witness who watched the chaos unfold on local station WMAQ.

Meanwhile, a woman whose car was vandalized by the teenagers told local station WFLD that her husband was hit while sitting in the driver's seat.

“The crowd was trying to get into Millennium Park, but there are checkpoints around the perimeter and people under 21 are not allowed without an adult,” WFLD notes.

Why were they trying to get into the park so late? According to WMAQ, they had seen “fliers posted on social media for a teen get-together.”

Cell phone video obtained by WMAQ reportedly showed a completely wrapped Tesla.

“It was a car, they were standing on top of several cars, standing on top of cars, and one of the cars kept going in circles, which I think was the one that caught fire, they set them on fire,” said a witness.
